Alopecia aka Baldness starts small. You barely notice it, and slowly it takes over your scalp. There are different causes of Alopecia, but Androgenetic Alopecia has been the most common one. There are other types of Alopecia caused by other conditions. There are many types and ways Baldness meets you, the only way to greet it goodbye is with your Best HairMate.

Alopecia vs Hair Loss

Alopecia is as mentioned the last stage of Hair Loss. Hair Loss as the name suggests is the losing of hair, but it isn’t that alone. Hair Loss actually is the stoppage of Regrowth of Hair. We all lose hair regularly. Our Hair is made up of protein named Keratin, and our body produces it to regrow hair. Hormones such as testosterone help in increasing the density and volume of hair in Men. The regeneration of Hair graft happens because we are well-nourished, and our hormonal levels are in balance. Once this equilibrium is disturbed, the Hair Loss begins.

Hair Loss begins in a mild manner. You start to notice a little more dandruff, or perhaps a few more hair strands on the places you most frequent and work on. Gradually, you start to notice thinness of Hair strands and lastly baldness sets. In this manner, Hair Loss is the beginning of a story whose end is always Baldness. So, the sooner you stop the chapter progression in the tale, the more chances are that your story will turn into a fairy tale, instead of a horror story.

Types of Alopecia

Alopecia means Baldness that has been established, but there are different ways baldness sets in. Here we discuss a few of them.

Androgenetic Alopecia

The most common alopecia type. This is also called ‘Male-Pattern Baldness’. In this scenario a man’s genetic affects his baldness. If you notice that your parents and relatives are susceptible to Baldness, you will also face it. This gene is possessed by many of us, but some of us are unluckier, because they might start losing hair in their 20s.

Alopecia Areata

This is an autoimmune condition. In this, your immune system attacks your healthy hair strands taking them to be the enemy. This results in hair loss that happens in patches and causes bald spots to appear. They can appear aesthetically displeasing and can exact a lot of psychological stress. Alopecia Areata can worsen and effect entire parts of your body too. If it affects your entire scalp, it is called Alopecia Totalis; whereas if it affects your entire body, it is called Alopecia Universalis.

Telogen Effluvium

The Hair Loss that is caused due to stress, meaning hair pulling is called as Telogen Effluvium. Your Hair Strand has an active phase and a resting phase. The active phase lasts for 4 years, whereas the resting phase lasts for 6 months. When stress is created on a hair strand, by putting them in a bun or wearing them as plaited, it causes an active hair strand to go into resting phase. This Alopecia is usually short-term, but if stress continues on the affected area, complete Alopecia will set in.

Levels in Alopecia

This is an important way we segregate and define Hair Loss. These parameters are also for Balding. The first stage of giving treatment is to identify the level of your Hair Loss. If it is very high, we will have to use more grafts and also use several other medication and treatment options. Whereas, if the level of baldness is on the lower scale we can prescribe, rigorous lifestyle changes and also some non-invasive procedures.

Grade 0

There is no Hair Fall or Hair Loss. This is the premium condition a man or a woman wants to be in, at least in terms of hair.

Grade 1 through 3

These are the initial phases of Hair Loss. There is no balding, just an increase in Hair Loss. This can be due to dandruff or other benign reasons. This is usually reversible. Yet, the Grade 3 is tricky. The Hair Loss is slightly more than previous levels, yet you start to see your scalp much clearly. So, if you get a Hair Transplant in this grade, your transplant cost will be low and you will receive the best results.

Grade 4 to 6:

These grades are the start of Balding. Also, you will notice the hair line receding back. The scalp area starts to face baldness, yet in Grade 4 or Grade 5 the back part of scalp or the donor area isn’t affected very much, thus ensuring ample amount of hair grafts required for transplant.

Grade 7

The complete Baldness level. In this grade, you will notice both the frontal and the back parts of scalp severely affected by Hair Loss. Thus, one finds a shortage of a good donor area and hair from different parts of body might be used for getting results. The best results in these Levels of Alopecia can be found in Level 1 through 4. We can reverse any Hair Loss that has happened to this stage, but post that we can only give satisfactory results. The two ways of resolving Alopecia are:

Surgical Methods: Surgical Methods are the best form of treating Alopecia. They ensure best results within the least amount of time. Hair Transplant is the best option of ensuring best hair regrowth. There are two types of Hair Transplants:

The traditional way of doing a Hair Transplant was called Strip-Harvesting Transplantation or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). In this procedure, a small strip of the donor area is cut with precision, the strip is very small. This strip is then preserved and transplanted in the recipient area. In the recipient area this strip is inserted at a particular length so that the hair graft grows successfully.

The modern-day Hair Transplant procedure uses the method known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUE uses a methodology where groups of hair grafts are extracted individually and then transplanted in the recipient area also individually. The main advantage of FUE over FUT is the reduction in scarring. To cut a strip in the donor area and then the further trauma to the recipient area can cause excessive scarring which will seriously hinders Hair Transplant results. Whereas in FUE there is no requirement of any large incisions, thus there is barely any trauma to the donor or the recipient area. FUE helps in quicker recovery from the procedure and also ensures best results.

Non-Invasive Methods: Surgical procedures are reserved for the worst cases of Hair Loss, but sometimes they are done for people in the initial stages of hair loss too, so that there hair appears thicker and better. Non-Invasive procedures are the talk of the town today. These procedures help to change the trajectory of your Hair Loss. They can include but are not limited to: PRP therapy, medications like finasteride, rogaine, etc. These procedures are also done with surgical methods increasing their efficacy.
